Ambulance services in Allegany were originally part of the Allegany Fire Department and the same dedicated personnel handled pre-hospital emergency care and fire calls.
In 2010 ambulance services became a stand-alone entity - Allegany Rescue & EMS (AREMS). Though an independent 501 (c) (3) non-profit entity, we still have a working relationship with the fire department and have some dual members.
We continue as an all-volunteer ambulance squad and our mission remains the same - “To serve the Allegany community and surrounding areas by providing top quality pre-hospital emergency care.” We are lucky to have Advanced Life Support (ALS) providers on our squad with decades of EMS experience across the spectrum of the military, paid and volunteer services. We have an ALS provider on most calls we run.
As a separate volunteer entity, we are NOT supported nor funded by any local tax dollars. We bill for our ambulance services, and along with generous charitable donations from our area residents and an occasional governmental grant we are able to operate two Advanced Life Support (ALS) ambulances, provide up-to-date medical supplies and equipment for them, provide personal protective equipment (PPE) for our members, as well as meet our other standard business operating expenses like utilities, office supplies and patient care reporting software.
